• Refers to someone experienced in childbirth who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to the mother before, during and after childbirth.

• Has skills medically proven to make a true difference in the experience of birth, decreasing interventions including caeserean section; and increasing maternal satisfaction.

• Recognizes birth as a natural event, and a key life experience that the parents will always remember.

• Stays with the mother continuously from early labour, until after the birth.

• Supports and compliments the care of her family, friends and partner.
